A full month following the introduction of iOS 17, on Wednesday, October 25th, 2023, Apple made iOS 17.1 available to the public. These changes are made to facilitate easier use and provide additional personalization alternatives for the user. The update adds several new features and repairs to your iPhone.
Here are several iPhone iOS 17.1 updates and features.
First and foremost, the update introduces a new AIrDrop feature that enables transfers to continue over the internet when you leave the range of the other device. This feature was announced at WWDC in June, but it did not make it into the initial release of iOS 17 last month. In addition to Wi-Fi, you can now choose to use cellular data for these AirDrop transfers via a new toggle in Settings.
The ability to "favorite" tracks, albums, and playlists is now available. The Music app now has new filtering options that make it easier to display your favorite songs from within your library.
Apple has included a gallery of covers for help in making personalized playlists. You can access these additional options by hitting the menu button with the three dots in the top-right corner of a playlist and then selecting "Edit." Apple has added a new "Song Suggestions" section to the bottom of your playlists, which it will intelligently present to "match the tone of your playlist."
Apple has updated StandBy mode, which transforms your iPhone into a smart display when it's charging and in landscape orientation, with new features. There is a new "Display" option located in the StandBy section of the Settings app. Here, there are new toggle switches for turning off the screen by itself, shortly after 20 seconds, or rarely.
This level of control over StandBy was not included in the initial release of iOS 17. With the new “Never” option, you can always see your StandBy widgets.
Have you ever mistakenly turned on your iPhone's torch and been told? It won't bother some iPhone users. With iOS 17.1, a torch icon appears in the Live Activities display across the top of the screen when you activate the torch. This feature is presumably exclusive to Live Activity-enabled iPhones, such as the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max and the iPhone 15 series.
iOS 17.1 fixes a longstanding iPhone Lock Screen Photo Shuffle issue. iOS 16 introduced Photo Shuffle, which randomly selects wallpaper from your photo library. It was initially possible to shuffle photos of people, nature, or pets without fine-tuning. However, iOS 17.1 lets you select an album for the Lock Screen Photo Shuffle function.
In addition to these new features, iOS 17.1 also addresses a multitude of bugs and performance issues that have afflicted iPhone users over the past month. Here are the fixes for iOS 17.1 bugs, according to Apple:
Support for Matter locks using home keys
Screen time sync consistency has been increased.
It fixes an issue that allowed Apple Watch transfers and first pairings to reset the Significant Location privacy option.
Avoids incoming callers' names not appearing while on another call.
Fixes text tone settings not showing custom and paid ringtones.
Corrects a keyboard responsiveness issue.
